The mention of Louisiana brings to mind, southern hospitality, Cajun food, Jazz, Mardi gras and New Orleans. These are just some of the fun things that await visitors to the southern state of Louisiana.
Louisiana has a number of different regions to explore, each with its own unique character. Plantation Country is like stepping into the past. This area is found in the south east of the state. You can tour a number of the beautiful plantation homes and learn about this interesting part of American history. Some of the plantations have guest facilities so you can stay overnight, making for a unique or romantic break. One plantation of particular interest that provides accommodation is The Myrtles, it is said to be the most haunted house in the United States. This part of Louisiana also has many antique shops, craft shops and heritage museums highlighting the local history.
Many travellers will have heard of Cajun country and it is a popular region of Louisiana with visitors. Here you will also find historical plantations such as the Chretien Point Plantation that is said to be haunted by the ghost a pirate killed in the house. Cajun country is highly influenced by the French Canadians that settled here many years ago. You will learn some new words, taste some great gumbo and have the chance to listen to authentic Cajun music.
Besides the history of the plantations, Louisiana has a strong historical connection to the Civil War. If you are interested in this then the Civil War Trail will be of interest. It has 27 sites that include battlefields and forts. Many of the local towns and cities have tried to preserve the old historical buildings providing some charming architecture to admire.
New Orleans, the most well known city in Louisiana is of course famous for many things, especially its Jazz and Mari Gras celebrations. The city was recently severely damaged by hurricane Katrina and it working its way back to its former self. The historic French Quarter has wonderful old buildings and entertainment for visitors to enjoy.
